Use of radiation to treat cancer
Stereotactic Radiation Therapy
Beam Directing onto Tumour
- Protective headgear is worn for those undergoing treatment for brain tumours.
- Each beam approaches the head from a different angle, and is then directed through a metal contraption which further narrows the beam to improve the precision of the radiation onto the tumour.[44]
- There are less side effects with this method, as the patient is being held still, so the imaging can be as exact as possible, knowing the patient will not move. This is why a very high dose of radiation (around 20Gy) can be delivered to the patient in few sessions compared to regular radiotherapy treatment.
